PROGRAMME FOR UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE DAY
10 am–6 pm
Free admission to the Weissenhof Museum in the Le Corbusier House
Venue: Weissenhof Museum in the Le Corbusier House, Rathenaustr. 1, 70191 Stuttgart
Almost 10 years ago, UNESCO inscribed Le Corbusier’s architectural work on the World Heritage List. Since 17 July 2016, UNESCO has recognised 17 representative structures and building complexes by the Swiss-French architect, located in seven countries across three continents, as an “exceptional contribution to modernism”. The sites of the first transnational series are located in France, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, Argentina, India and Japan. Le Corbusier (1887–1965) is considered one of the most influential innovators in 20th-century architecture. With his buildings, visionary urban designs and programmatic writings, he has shaped generations of architects internationally – right up to the present day! The detached and semi-detached houses he designed in 1927 for the Weissenhof Estate as part of the Werkbund exhibition ‘Die Wohnung’ are also part of the World Heritage Site. Since 2006, the Weissenhof Museum has been housed in the Le Corbusier House, the semi-detached home of Le Corbusier and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret. It is the only house in the Weissenhofsiedlung open to visitors. The left half of the house presents the history of the Weissenhof Estate, whilst the right half of the semi-detached house allows visitors to experience Le Corbusier’s design for a ‘transformable living space’ in its reconstructed 1927 state.
11 am + 3 pm
Free outdoor guided tours of the Weissenhof Estate
Meeting point: by the advertising column opposite the entrance to the Weissenhof Museum in the Le Corbusier House
Duration: 45 minutes. No booking required.
In 1927, the Deutscher Werkbund, in collaboration with the City of Stuttgart, succeeded in realising a manifesto of modernism: 17 international architects, under the artistic direction of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, presented 21 innovative and forward-looking designs for modern, health-conscious and functional living. Among those involved, alongside Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe, were other architects of renown such as Walter Gropius and Hans Scharoun. Within just four months, 500,000 visitors flocked to the exhibition ‘The Apartment’, which attracted worldwide attention. The guided tour of the Weissenhofsiedlung (no interior viewings) still showcases the diversity of ideas behind the houses built in 1927 and explains their significance in architectural history.
12 noon–5 pm
Free admission to the exhibition ‘Dr Otto Lossen – The Photographer of the Weissenhofsiedlung 1927’
Venue: Weissenhofwerkstatt in the Mies van der Rohe House, Am Weissenhof 20, 70191 Stuttgart
In 1927, Dr Otto Lossen was awarded the exclusive commission to photograph and document the buildings of the Werkbund exhibition “Die Wohnung” in Stuttgart. His photographs contributed significantly to the enthusiastic and international reception of the Weissenhof Estate and continue to shape perceptions of it to this day. The exhibition sheds light for the first time on the life and work of the doctor of chemistry.
