Dr. Otto Lossen – The Photographer of the Weissenhof Estate 1927

In 1927, Dr. Otto Lossen was given the exclusive commission to photograph and document the buildings of the Werkbund exhibition “Die Wohnung” (The Apartment) in Stuttgart. His photos were used as press images and were published around the globe during the exhibition period. As a result, they contributed significantly to the enthusiastic international reception of the Weissenhof Estate and continue to shape its perception to this day.

Little was previously known about Lossen’s life and other works. The exhibition is dedicated to the biography of the doctor of chemistry, who came to photography through a position at the Stuttgart-based company J. Hauff & Co. Other works by him are also on display, some of them as original prints. Also on display are new, large-format, high-quality reproductions of his Weissenhof images. These are based on original contact prints discovered in various archives from the lost glass plates.

An exhibition curated by Inken Gaukel, in scientific collaboration with Wolfram Janzer.
