Reading
Pali Meller: „Papierküsse. Briefe eines jüdischen Vaters aus der Haft 1942/43“
(„Paper Kisses: Letters from a Jewish Father in Prison, 1942/43“)

Introduction by Anja Krämer, Director of the Weissenhof Museum in the Le Corbusier House
Texts read by Tobias Keil

Pali Meller (1902–1943) was a Hungarian architect. As a construction manager, he was involved in the Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart in 1927. Immediately after completing his studies, he began working in the office of Dutch architect Jacobus Johannes Pieter Oud in Rotterdam. When Oud was commissioned to design five terraced houses for the famous Stuttgart Werkbund exhibition ‘Die Wohnung’ (The Apartment), he sent Meller to the site. These houses can still be seen today in the Weissenhofsiedlung.

In 1930, Pali Meller moved to Berlin and started a family with the dancer Petronella Colpa. She died in an accident in 1935, after which Meller raised his two children alone. Although he was of Jewish descent, he initially remained unmolested even after the National Socialists came to power. In 1942, he was denounced and sentenced to six years in prison.

From prison, he wrote 24 letters to his children Paul and Barbara. In 2012, they were published by Klett-Cotta under the title „Papierküsse“ („Paper Kisses“). With wordplay and great affection, Meller attempts to fulfil his role as a father from afar. He died of tuberculosis in prison in 1943.

In the reading, the humorous and heart-wrenching letters from prison are supplemented by several letters from the construction period of the Weissenhofsiedlung.

State inaugurates WahreWunderBänke in Stuttgart
10.10.2025

Press release from the Ministry of Regional Development and Housing

Together with the state capital Stuttgart, the Minister for Regional Development and Housing, Nicole Razavi MdL, inaugurated two WahreWunderBänke (TrueWonderBenches) on 10 October near the world-famous houses designed by Le Corbusier.

The new information units draw attention to the entire World Heritage Site in Baden-Württemberg.

Minister Razavi said:

‘The WahreWunderBänke in the Weissenhofsiedlung invite visitors to experience Le Corbusier’s unique architecture. The benches are eye-catching, a place to rest and a source of information all in one.’

Dr Alexandra Sußmann, Mayor for Social Affairs, Health and Integration of the City of Stuttgart, said:

‘The city is grateful to the state for drawing additional attention to Stuttgart’s world cultural heritage, the Le Corbusier houses, with the two “WahreWunderBänke”. The state initiative draws attention to the formative architectural influence and high cultural value of the two houses and the Weissenhofsiedlung, which attract tens of thousands of visitors from all over the world every year.’

Prof. Dr Claus Wolf, President of the State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments in the Stuttgart Regional Council, emphasised:

‘UNESCO World Heritage Sites are monuments that have universal significance for all of humanity. That is why the World Heritage title is both an honour and an obligation, which the State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments is happy to accept. The new multifunctional benches are a great help in this regard, as they are ideal places for communicating the World Heritage concept.’

WahreWunderBänke

The information boards integrated into the WahreWunderBänke each contain a map with a rough spatial location of all seven World Heritage Sites in the state, an overview text on the World Heritage family in Baden-Württemberg, a text on the specific World Heritage Site and a link to the film “Die sieben Welterbewunder Baden-Württemberg” (The Seven World Heritage Wonders of Baden-Württemberg). Benches have already been inaugurated on the monastery island of Reichenau, near Maulbronn Monastery, at the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes in Osterburken, Buchen and Walldürn, in Baden-Baden and near the Pile Dwellings in Uhldingen.

State’s World Heritage Concept supports UNESCO World Heritage Sites

The WahreWunderBänke are part of the Baden-Württemberg World Heritage Concept. With this concept, the state government supports the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Baden-Württemberg. The aim is to preserve the cultural and architectural heritage together, to network it and to make it more accessible to the public. To this end, measures and products are being developed that can be implemented at all World Heritage Sites. These include an image film, an exhibition and a brochure.

WahreWunderBänke can be installed at all World Heritage Sites in Baden-Württemberg as a sign of solidarity between the sites and as an attractive recognition symbol. The neighbouring municipalities of a World Heritage Site can contact the State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments in the Stuttgart Regional Council with a location proposal.

There are seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Baden-Württemberg: the Cistercian monastery in Maulbronn (since 1993), the monastery island of Reichenau (2000), the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes (2005), the Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps (2011), the two Le Corbusier houses in Stuttgart’s Weissenhofsiedlung (2016), the Caves and Ice Age Art of the Swabian Alb in the Ach and Lone valleys (2017) and Baden-Baden, under the title “Great Spa Towns of Europe” (2021). All seven World Heritage Sites in the state are characterised by their exceptional universal value, authenticity and uniqueness and are part of the priceless and irreplaceable heritage of all humanity.

Groundbreaking ceremony for the Weissenhof.Forum –
time capsule handed over for the foundation stone
23.07.2025

Joint press release by
IBA’27 – Internationale Bauausstellung 2027 StadtRegion Stuttgart,
Freunde der Weissenhofsiedlung e.V. and the state capital Stuttgart

The construction of the new Weissenhof.Forum officially began with the groundbreaking ceremony today, Wednesday, July 23 at 11 am. This was the starting signal for one of the central projects of the Internationale Bauausstellung 2027 StadtRegion Stuttgart (IBA’27).

Das Weissenhof.Forum wird ein zentraler Bestandteil der IBA'27 in Stuttgart.

As part of the groundbreaking ceremony, a time capsule was handed over to the construction company – a greeting to posterity and a sign of the beginning of a new era at the historic site.

“The Weissenhof Estate makes Stuttgart a globally recognized city of innovative architecture and modern architecture. The Le Corbusier houses of the Weissenhof Estate even became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016. The Weissenhof Forum will pay tribute to this World Heritage Site and take a look into the future of architecture.”
– Lord Mayor Dr. Frank Nopper

The Weissenhof.Forum, which is being built at the entrance to the world-famous Weissenhof Estate, will in future serve as a central information and starting point for visitors. It combines exhibition areas, a media room, a store, catering facilities and event and work areas. The new building places particular emphasis on sustainability: constructed using wood and clay with a photovoltaic façade and a green roof, the building aims to achieve a climate-neutral plus-energy standard.

“Almost one hundred years ago, the Werkbundsiedlung at Weissenhof was built in just four and a half months, making a statement with global appeal. With the Weissenhof.Forum, this site now has a worthy entrance. The new building translates the language of modernism into the present – in form, technology and material. And it shows: If the client, construction industry and architecture act as equals and with determination, forward-looking buildings can be created in a short space of time, even today. The fact that this project is becoming a reality is thanks to the commitment of many people involved – first and foremost the City of Stuttgart and the association Freunde der Weissenhofsiedlung. In 2027, we will open the forum together – as an open place that invites people of all ages and backgrounds to discover the Weissenhof Estate and engage in discussions about the future, far beyond the IBA.”
– Dr. Gabriele König, Managing Director of IBA’27 GmbH and Andreas Hofer, Director of IBA’27

Suse Kletzin, Chairwoman of the association Freunde der Weissenhofsiedlung, adds:
“The groundbreaking ceremony marks the start of a new chapter in the history of the association Freunde der Weissenhofsiedlung. Many volunteers and full-time staff have been involved in writing it. We are looking forward to an exciting new time in telling the Weissenhof story and wish the City of Stuttgart as the client, the planners from Barkow Leibinger and the construction team from Zech Hochbau all the best for the construction period!”

Completion is planned by December 31, 2026

The planning and implementation will be carried out by the bidding consortium Zech Hochbau AG / Barkow Leibinger Gesellschaft von Architekten mbH, which won the Europe-wide award procedure with a design of high architectural quality and a forward-looking energy concept.

Following the demolition of the old building, work has now begun on the building construction. The Weissenhof.Forum is scheduled for completion and commissioning by December 31, 2026 – just in time for the 100th anniversary year of the estate and before the start of the IBA’27 exhibition year.

New name: “BIZ” becomes Weissenhof.Forum
06.05.2025

The proposed visitor and information center at the Weissenhofsiedlung receives a new name

A new reception building will be built at the Weissenhofsiedlung by 2027, just in time for the 100th anniversary of the Estate and the presentation year of IBA’27 (Internationale Bauausstellung StadtRegion Stuttgart). It will be the central starting point for all guests visiting the Weissenhofsiedlung in the future to learn more about the history of this international icon of modern architecture.

Now the building is getting a new name: The Visitor and Information Center (“BIZ”) will become the Weissenhof.Forum. The new name is a programmatic step towards the future: from 2027, the Weissenhof Forum will be a central location for mediation, events, exhibitions and exchange.

First Mayor Dr. Fabian Mayer:
“With the Weissenhof.Forum, an internationally important site of architectural modernism is not only getting a new appearance, but also a new voice. The name stands for openness, exchange and the future – and makes it clear that the Weissenhof Estate remains a lively place where history is conveyed and can be experienced.”

The name was developed in a participatory branding process together with the agency Jung:Kommunikation. It is the first visible component of a new brand structure at Weissenhof, which links the players and locations under the strong umbrella brand Weissenhof. With Weissenhof., a concept has been created that provides orientation and carries the uniqueness of this architectural heritage into the future. The next step is to develop a corporate design that gives the brand its visual identity.

Background

The Weissenhof.Forum is a central contribution by the city of Stuttgart to IBA’27 and is being built in a prominent location directly at the entrance to the Weissenhof Estate.

As a central contact point, the building will improve the existing infrastructure and release the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Le Corbusier duplex (Weissenhofmuseum) by taking over many of the functions that the original residential building cannot fulfill in the long term and with ever-increasing visitor numbers: Ticket sales, checkroom, café and bookshop.

The Weissenhof.Forum will also feature a temporary exhibition space, a workshop room and a new permanent exhibition that complements the exhibition in the original Le Corbusier House and the tour of the estate. Linked to the permanent exhibition, a multifunctional media room is being created, which will serve as an extension of the permanent exhibition and as an event space. The exhibition concept is being developed in close cooperation between the Stuttgart Cultural Office and the Friends of the Weissenhof Estate Association.

The award-winning design by Barkow Leibinger Architects in collaboration with Zech Hochbau AG envisages three two-storey, interconnected structures. Flowing transitions between interior and exterior spaces create an open spatial concept. Sustainability plays a central role: the building, which was awarded as IBA’27 project, is constructed using wood and clay and is complemented by a recycled concrete floor slab, a green roof and an innovative photovoltaic façade.
