In this talk, Dr. Khawas explores Le Corbusier’s vision for Chandigarh as a modernist city, its evolution into a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the role of Pierre Jeanneret and the Indian team in shaping the city’s identity. The session also reflects on how this architectural legacy is experienced today through immersive architectural tours across India.

Dr. Avita Khawas is an art, architecture, and cultural tourism expert, and the founder of WalkAroundIndia, a tour company based in Chandigarh. Her work focuses on interpreting India’s artistic and architectural heritage for international audiences through curated, experience-led journeys.

UNESCO World Heritage Day 2026
On 7 June 2026, UNESCO World Heritage Day will be held under the theme ‘Together for Peace and Understanding’.
In Germany, a total of 55 cultural and natural heritage sites are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. What these sites have in common is their outstanding universal value – that is, their special significance not only for national or local communities, but for all of humanity.
